Custom aquarium pricing spans from approximately $5,000 for a modest freshwater built-in to well over $250,000 for a large-scale commercial reef installation. The spread is not arbitrary. It reflects real differences in engineering complexity, materials, livestock, and the time required to design, fabricate, and install each system.
Installation Cost Ranges
Here are the all-in investment ranges we typically see, including the tank, equipment, plumbing, electrical, aquascape, and initial livestock:
- Freshwater built-in (up to 100 gallons): $5,000 – $15,000
- Freshwater built-in (100–300 gallons): $15,000 – $40,000
- Saltwater fish-only (up to 150 gallons): $12,000 – $30,000
- Saltwater reef (up to 150 gallons): $15,000 – $35,000
- Saltwater reef (150–500 gallons): $35,000 – $100,000+

What Drives the Cost Up?
Several factors push projects toward the higher end of the range. System type is the most significant — a reef aquarium is fundamentally more expensive to build and maintain than a freshwater system of the same size, because the equipment requirements are more demanding and the livestock is more valuable. Scale matters too: larger tanks require more structural engineering, more equipment, and significantly more time to install and aquascape.
Location adds cost in two ways. First, access — a tank going into a Manhattan penthouse on the 40th floor requires more logistical coordination than one in a suburban home with a wide service entrance. Second, travel — projects outside our primary service area (New York, New Jersey) require mobilization costs.
Ongoing Maintenance Costs
Installation is a one-time cost. Maintenance is ongoing, and it should factor into your total budget from the beginning. Our maintenance plans start at $250 per visit for straightforward freshwater systems and $450 per visit for saltwater and reef systems. Most residential clients are on bi-weekly service, which works out to approximately $6,000 to $11,700 per year depending on the system.
