New York City
Custom aquariums designed, engineered, and installed across Manhattan, Brooklyn, and the surrounding metro since 2002.
From pre-war co-ops on Fifth Avenue to new-construction towers on Billionaires' Row, Okeanos Group builds custom aquariums NYC collectors and architects return to again and again. Every project begins on site, runs through our in-house design and engineering team, and finishes with a hand-delivered install by the same craftsmen who built it. No catalog tanks. No drop-shipped equipment. One firm, one shop, one responsible name on the job.
Our work has been featured in Architectural Digest, and our studio has served as the quiet collaborator behind residential and commercial installations for some of the most recognized interior designers and architecture firms in New York.
Building a custom aquarium NYC co-op or condo board will approve is a different discipline than building one anywhere else. The physics of a 500-gallon tank on the twenty-eighth floor of a 1927 pre-war are not the physics of a suburban basement install. We have spent more than two decades working within the constraints that define New York residential construction, and that experience is built into every custom aquarium NYC project we accept.
Co-op and condo boards require engineered load letters, insurance certificates, and in-building protection plans before approval. We prepare and submit the full package on behalf of the client. Freight elevator weight limits, pad protection requirements, and service-entrance booking are handled by our project coordinators, not left to the owner or the building manager.
Sub-floor reinforcement is standard practice for any tank over 300 gallons in a pre-war building. We coordinate directly with the building's structural engineer when one is on record, or we bring our own. Steel sisters, LVL plates, or reinforced cabinetry bases are specified based on the span and the existing joist condition.
Equipment concealment is where luxury custom aquariums NYC collectors expect actually separates from standard work. Pumps, skimmers, reactors, controllers, and reservoirs are housed in mechanical closets, adjacent utility rooms, or purpose-built basement fish rooms with silenced returns. A well-executed Okeanos install reveals nothing but water, light, and glass.
Our scope ranges from a 150-gallon peninsula in a Chelsea one-bedroom to a full basement life-support buildout for a Central Park West triplex. The craft scales, the standard does not. Tribeca loft, Upper East Side classic six, Central Park West tower, Brooklyn Heights brownstone, Long Island City high-rise — every neighborhood has its own engineering profile, and we know them all.
A collaboration with a leading contemporary artist that pushed the aquarium out of the decorative category and into fine art. The installation functions as a living sculptural work, with biology, lighting, and architectural framing calibrated to the artist's conceptual brief. A reference piece for any custom aquarium NYC gallery or collector.
A downtown loft integration where the tank was built into the envelope of the space rather than placed against it. The install uses the loft's original structural column as a sightline anchor, with filtration routed through the existing utility core.
A high-rise co-op with a full equipment-concealment design — every pump, sump, and controller hidden behind millwork in an adjacent utility zone. The display tank reads as a single uninterrupted pane of water in the main living space.
A private building entrance piece that greets residents before they reach the elevators. Scaled to the lobby's proportions and lit to hold its presence against the architecture. Equipment and service access are routed through the porter's room.
A Manhattan office reef tank built to operate on a commercial maintenance cadence and to survive weekend power events. Redundant pumps, UPS-backed controllers, and a dedicated service agreement are part of the base specification.
A custom architectural piece that blurs the line between aquarium and water feature. Built to the architect's drawings with our engineering team embedded into the construction schedule from rough-in forward.

Every custom aquarium NYC project we accept moves through four defined phases. The phases are sequential, the timeline is transparent, and the same project lead carries the file from first consultation to final acclimation.
We begin with an initial consultation — on site wherever possible — to understand how the space is used, what the client responds to, and what the architectural envelope will allow. A site survey follows, measuring floor load, electrical capacity, available water supply, and sightlines. We deliver 3D renderings so every stakeholder is approving the same object. This phase typically runs three to four weeks.
Our engineering team produces the full documentation set: load calculations stamped as required, plumbing schematics, electrical specs, life-support routing, and the building-board submission package. We handle co-op and condo board approvals end to end, including insurance riders, contractor certifications, and the protection plan for common areas. This phase runs four to eight weeks.
Every tank is hand-crafted in our workshop. We build in low-iron glass or cast acrylic depending on the application, with tolerances held to our own standard. Custom cabinetry, integrated lighting, and concealed plumbing are built alongside the tank. Fabrication typically runs six to twelve weeks, with client visits welcome at the mid-build review.
White-glove delivery, staged on the freight elevator schedule we have already booked. The tank is set, leveled, and pressure-tested before any water touches the system. Livestock acclimation is staged — corals, invertebrates, and fish added in sequence and monitored over a two-to-four-week commissioning window.
Most NYC projects run 16–28 weeks end-to-end.
SPS-dominant reefs, LPS gardens, and mixed reefs with curated soft coral collections. We calibrate lighting spectrum, flow pattern, and supplementation to the animals the client wants to keep long term, not to a generic reef template.
Planted displays in the Takashi Amano tradition, with hardscape layouts built for multi-year aging. Discus showpieces with blackwater chemistry and architectural driftwood. Freshwater is a quieter art than reef, and we treat it that way.
Tuna, jacks, and other schooling pelagic species require tank geometry, flow, and feeding regimens most firms will not commit to. We will, when the space and the client support it.
Angels, tangs, triggers, and specialty species in large-volume systems where aggression, space, and diet are engineered together. Often the right answer for clients who want the drama of saltwater without reef maintenance.
Cylinders up to commercial scale, in-wall inserts that function as room dividers, and through-window pieces that sit between two interior spaces. Structural coordination starts at the framing stage.
Interior atrium ponds, exterior water gardens, and architectural koi features for NYC properties.

Full service across every neighborhood, every building type. Tribeca lofts, Upper East Side classic sixes, Central Park West towers, Chelsea and West Village townhouses, Financial District condos, Harlem brownstones.
Park Slope, DUMBO, Williamsburg, Brooklyn Heights, Cobble Hill, Prospect Heights. Brownstone reinforcement work is a regular part of our Brooklyn practice.
Long Island City high-rises are an active segment for custom aquariums NYC collectors moving across the river for space. We also service Astoria and Forest Hills.
Estate work and equestrian-property installations, including basement fish rooms and pond-to-tank indoor-outdoor systems.
North Shore estates and the Hamptons. See The Stable Home, Hamptons for a recent reference project.
Alpine, Englewood, Saddle River, Short Hills, and the Gold Coast condo corridor.
Maintenance is weekly or bi-weekly for all borough installs, scheduled on the same day each visit and delivered by the same technician whenever possible.
Require sub-floor reinforcement for any tank over 300 gallons. We specify the reinforcement, coordinate with the building engineer, and complete the work inside the protection plan approved by the board.
The easiest category to build in when we are brought in before closing. Framing stage is the ideal window to coordinate the tank location, filtration routing, and electrical sub-panel.
Require the full submission package — insurance, contractor certifications, load letter, protection plan. We prepare and deliver the package, attend the board meeting if requested, and answer every technical question on the record.
Managed by our project coordinator, not by the owner. We handle the certificate of insurance, the pad protection, the porter coordination, and the move-in window.
We have completed custom aquariums NYC installs across this segment, including buildings with restrictive delivery windows and extended insurance requirements.
Give us ten-foot ceilings and the option for peninsula tanks, bridge tanks spanning two rooms, and in-wall inserts that take advantage of the volume.
The most flexible typology we work in. Basement filter rooms hide every piece of life-support equipment — sumps, reactors, controllers, reservoirs, chillers — leaving only the display on the parlor or garden floor.
Okeanos does not publish fixed prices. Every custom aquarium NYC project we quote is priced after site survey, engineering review, and livestock planning. Ranges only, for orientation:
Every Okeanos project is custom-quoted after site survey. We do not offer package pricing, and we do not subcontract the build. For a more detailed read on how custom aquarium NYC costs are built up, see /blog/custom-home-aquarium-cost.
